Growing Pains

A friend of mine blogged that she no longer felt comfortable in her own skin. Her kids are grown and gone and the stay at home work she does no longer works.

It's called growing pains and it took me a while to wrap my mind around this concept.
Each time my life changed I had to grow and change with it. Actually our life's circumstance define who we are at that moment. If we aren't flexible enough to morph we become lost souls. I can't tell you how many times I have re invented myself.

I turned in my eighty's disco clothes for a breast pump. Discarded that then came the car pool, then there was Debra the volunteer, the socialite, community activist, on and on, now writer.

What I am saying is change is the one constant thing in your life. Roll with it. Don't know what is coming next? Neither do I, but I am open to any possibility.

I will share this with you. On mornings that I wake up and my mind draws a blank, I know something new is about to catch my fancy but don't know exactly what that might be. I lie face down on the carpet, hands stretched out and say (sometimes out loud, sometimes to myself) "here I am Lord, use me, let thy will be done". In a short time I am on a new adventure.

My husband doesn't look at this as growth, he says "You wake up in a new world everyday, how sad that you can't find one thing and stick with it." I say, "oh glorious me, look how I soar!"

How do you handle growth spurts?

  1. That sounds like a wonderful way to start the day. Maybe not so relaxing with the pitter patter of four year old feet that inhabit my household now, but I can envision it at some point in the future as a great, almost meditative, practice.

    Thanks for sharing!

  3. When I was younger I was afraid of change. I went through many growing pains. Now I plunge ahead, nerves and all. I even see my highest points as the ones were I'm under the most stress...that's when I'm changing.

  4. I can relate to this post. My children are getting older, and with each stage, I mourn what I'm leaving behind. Upwards and onwards.

  5. The way you embrace change is admirable Debra. Sometimes I find myself a little resistant to some changes but still try to move ahead even if my knees or knocking :)

  9. Thanks for following. Happy to return the favor. I, too, believe in rolling with the changes but that's not to say it's always easy. Constants are rare and precious things.

  10. I love your attitude! You're absolutely right. Life changes, and you have to roll with it. In my life, this is the first year my kids have been in school all day. I wondered how I'd adjust, but I'm so busy with writing and teaching, that I barely have a moment to rest!

  11. Beautiful!

I'm a home-birth mommy and when we had our fifth, preemie, in a hospital I listened to a nurse make a suggestion, "If you don't bend, you will brake". Thank gosh for her words.

Thank you for sharing your 'blank mind' mornings with us. Healing.

I'm really enjoying this blog connection!

  12. Squid- how boring life would be if everything was constant.
SherryE- just bend and sway and breathe. Its the circle of life
Archna- It's nice to pass on wisdom you've learned on your journey to help others. I wish I had someone when I was younger to have shared these thoughts with me.

While others are trying so hard to get their "followers" up. I try to stay focus on just the joy of meeting great bloggers. I am always blessed on the challenges. Thank you for coming by!

  14. I think it gets harder as we age, but you are always grateful for the gift of life and being able to see the sun come up every day. Little things make me laugh and I share them with my husband. We read the paper to each other, doesn't that sound strange, but it's a pleasure, that an a perfect cup of coffee or tea. I miss my grandkids, now that they are teenagers (one set), the others too far away. But it's wonderful to "meet" you.

  17. I was always afraid of outward change and the constant change in my thought process. But now , I have made peace with myself, can't be what I am not, might as well be what I still can.

  19. I tend to be resistant to change - I like my comfortable rut, a little too much I think. So I'm trying to "grow out of it"! :-0

  23. I'm with you, Debra, I like changes. Writing is about the only think I've stuck with for any length of time. If I think I have mastery of something, I become bored with it.

  24. I try very hard to just go with the flow. I like changes and learning new things. I think it keeps you sharp and young.
