U Turn

I have a confession, an embarrassment really. I am directionally impaired. That's right, I don't know North from South, East from West. I could stand outside my front door in the middle of the street and I couldn't tell you which way I was facing. I have tried to learn. My husband said, "Picture the map of the U.S. in your head with the compass pointing up for N and down for S." I just can't visualize it like that when I am in my living room. I'm not an idiot, I can read a map. I know East coast West coast etc; It's more complicated than that.

Yesterday a really nice young man came to measure my home for carpet. He asked me which direction was a certain window facing? "I'm not good with directions," I answered honestly. He fiddled around making guesses about the direction but in a nutshell he didn't know either. So I started thinking maybe there are other people that have this problem. Now I am hoping that just maybe someone out there could explain it to me.

If I were in slavery times and was trying to run away I would be running Southwest and the other slaves would be running North. What am I not getting? Is there anyone out there that can teach me? And yes I know the sun rise in the East and set in the West, but the sun moves during the day.

  1. I can only tell the direction East and West because The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. as for north and south I don't know.

    Enjoyed your post.

  2. Move to Arizona...you'll figure it out in no time at all. Everything goes by NESW here, and believe me, you'll get lost in a hurry if you don't pay attention to it.

  3. How funny! Someone once told me to refer to the directions of the highways you use, it does help me.

In my culture, not that we all do this, we face our beds towards the rising sun so when we wake, our head is towards the East. I guess that's a perspective type of thought. :)

I hope your health is well. Happy to see that you are back!

  4. Personally, I can't drive or read a map without the East/West & North/South. When people give me directions like, "Left on such and such, then right, then another right." It drives me crazy. I need street/house numbers and highway numbers.
I guess if in your mind, you fix on where the sun rises and sets, East and West as(WE) then the North and South become obvious. Even if the Sun is moving up in the sky, it still is on an East to West track.
Thanks for visiting my 'U' post. The two little models are my grandchildren I'm a new follower. You have great posts.

  5. Debra at least you wouldn't be running alone, I would be right there with you. I read everyone's answer and all I could think was, Ahhhhh, stop! Give me an address so I can put it in Mapquest, lol.

  6. Yvonne, Kathy, Ey Archna & M.J. OK NONE OF US KNOW DIRECTIONS! HA HA This is so funny, I thought I was the only one. Actually this is comforting. At least wel all agree the sun rise in the East and sets in the West. Where it goes from there who knows? Can we all say GPS! This is so funny. I enjoyed the comments even more than the post.

  7. Kathy, I'm sorry I re read your post and you were explaining to me how you get the direction thing. I'm going to hold unto your thoughts and apply them tomorrow as soon as the sun is up. Wait a minute my husband knows his directions at night. O.k. I'm still lost.
M.J.- I was in Mesa this past January. What a small world!

  8. I'm lucky in that I've lived along the Rocky Mountains most of my life, so I can always find west and, therefore, any other direction I need. However, it is tricky when traveling. My best luck has been with keeping track of whatever large road or freeway I can find.

  9. I feel for you - my family has always said I couldn't find my way out of a paper bag, even if it was open ;-)

Glad to meet you thru A to Z!

  10. I can understand this as many in my family suffer from this (except me)
And every time I try to teach them, they seem to understand and again the next day we are back to square one (literally) with no idea if they are moving north or south when they step out of the square.
    I give up.

  11. Hi Debra! I'm directionally challenged. I'm always asking my husband about the directions thing. He's gotten used to it over the years.

Thanks for your recent visit to my blog.
